In today’s episode of “Are they together, or are they not?” Your favorite celebrity ex-couple was seen together out and about at the Copa America Final. In the video, Camila’s blonde, Shawn’s distracted, and they seem to be having a normal, friendly conversation.
And although we’re hoping that there’s more to the story, in these uncertain times, it’s still hard to define their relationship.
Camila Cabello and Shawn Mendes are the celebrity couple equivalent to the on-again, off-again couple. But with the way that sparks fly whenever we see them together? Oof, y’all belong together and nobody can prove us otherwise.
Get ready to dive into their very long and very confusing dating history on the occasion of them being seen together.
Not-So-Quick History Lesson
While on a deep dive into their history lesson, we found out that their on again, off again has been going on for almost a decade now. Yes, you read that right. It all started before 2014 when they were still just friends, and Shawn was admitted to making moves on her, which Camila was shutting down. That’s when the fandom, called Shamila came into existence.
And Shawn Mendes wasn’t lying when he said, “You know I can treat you better than he can.” because in 2018, before the release of Senorita, Shawn was seen all over the internet, braiding the Senorita’s hair.
The fandom got their crossover of the year when Shawn and Camila announced the release of their song, “Senorita” in 2019. And finally, we were given a holy grail right into our hands with the release of the oh-so-steamy music video of Senorita on June 20th, 2019.
Just in case you’re wondering, no, they weren’t together yet at the time the music video was shot and released. Camila was still with her then boyfriend, Matthew Hussey. Guess you also need to have great acting skills to sing in an MV, right? Right???
The Rise of Shamila
Their chemistry in the music video led to the internet speaking up, in a wrong move, against Camila’s boyfriend, leading to them breaking up. But when the trolls still hadn’t stopped, it prompted the Havana singer to defend her ex.
After that, it was just Camila and Shawn painting the town red with their “secret” romance. They were seen having intimate conversations and meetings all over town, seen flirting with each other on social media.
The Big Reveal
And, UGH, the kisses. They were captured multiple times sharing the steamiest to sweetest kisses, but they still continued to deny comment on their relationship. Understandable, but still unfortunate.
Instead they just kept posting each other on their Instagrams and hoping that fans and news outlets would get the hint.
Picture this, August 6th, 2019—Camila talks about falling in love without saying names, and then on August 9th, for Shawn’s 21st birthday wish, Camila drops the L word on her Instagram. And, as one would expect, the internet imploded. Because that was really out of the blue there, even for us.
Fortunately, they got together to the greatest support and appreciation from Shamila fans who had been shipping them together.
In October 2019, he let slip the fact that they had been together for 4 months, and he had started dating her on July 4th. But wait, rewind to a month earlier and you’ll remember THE POST OF THE YEAR that they posted on instagram on September 12th, 2019. The post included a clip of them kissing, yes, just kissing, in front of the camera, and was meant to be a response to all their kissing critics.
The Breakup
After a couple years of dating in harmony and being photographed kissing all over town, they announced their break up in November 2021.
On instagram, they stated: “Hey guys, we’ve decided to end our romantic relationship but our love for one another as humans is stronger than ever. We started our relationship as best friends and will continue to be best friends. We so appreciate your support from the beginning and moving forward.”
Back Together?
A year and a half later, around April, 2023, the former couple were spotted kissing at Coachella, as ya do, and Camila dropped a song called “June Gloom” with the lyrics hinting at their reunion.
They split again a few months later—and back in May 2024 Camila chatted about the breakup on Call Her Daddy.
“You’re just kind of like, it’s not a fit, it doesn’t feel right,” the singer said. “I will always care about him and love him. He’s such a good person and I’m lucky because some people have exes that are awful, and he is not. He’s a really kind, good person.”
