In this TV adaptation, a young boy obsessed with Vikings and ancient Greeks discovers a portal in his cupboard that transports him back in time. There, he encounters historical figures, including Kudrow’s character, who reveals themselves as the Time Bandits—a crack team of expert thieves. This unique role showcases Kudrow’s ability to blend humor with fantasy in a completely new genre for her.

Kudrow’s casting was a thoughtful decision by the show’s creators, particularly Taika Waititi, who admires her comedic work. “I think “The Comeback” is one of the greatest shows ever made in America, and she just really carries that show,” Waititi says, highlighting her role in HBO’s satirical mockumentary series. His praise highlights her long-standing reputation as a comic legend, a status solidified through her various roles over the years.

Lisa Kudrow describes Penelope’s motivation in Time Bandits as stemming from a sense of being undervalued by the Supreme Being. “And for her and the other bandits who came with her, [they’re] all from the realm of the Supreme Being and felt unappreciated, and they stole the map so that they could travel through time,”  Kudrow explains, highlighting the central conflict of the show’s first season.

Kudrow’s Signature Humor

The role continues Kudrow’s trend of playing charming, comedic characters with just the right amount of self-awareness. “When I do really stupid things, just being completely unaware of something, that’s what makes me laugh the hardest,” she explains her attraction to offbeat humor. 

“And it’s very human also, I think, to just not be aware of how you actually move through the world and how you’re perceived and what effect you’re having.” This is just another way of saying, “If they’re laughing at you, laugh with them,” something we’re one hundred percent sure Phoebe Buffay would say.

It’s wild that the new generation will know her as a time-traveling thief/pirate Penelope and not as Princess Consuela Banana Hammock aka Phoebe Buffay.
