Lady Gaga’s Role as Harley Quinn
Lady Gaga transformed into Harley Quinn in the new musical, “Joker: Folie A Deux”.
The DC sequel will have Gaga joining the franchise as Phoenix’s partner in crime and romance.
Her transition from Lady Gaga to Lady Joker was so seamless that it’s hard to believe that she is actually a world renowned singer.
This will mark the introduction of Harley Quinn to the Joker franchise. Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix is reprising his role as Joker from his 2019 DC film of the same name.
The synopsis reads:
“Failed comedian Arthur Fleck meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while incarcerated at Arkham State Hospital. Upon his release, the two of them embark on a doomed romantic misadventure.”
The Plot of Folie A Deux
Folie A Deux will see Gaga falling in love with Joker after she sees him on TV while he’s in jail, and feels like she’s not alone anymore. Which induces the doomed romantic misadventure they next embark on.
Instead of on a mission to “change him” Quinn will join Joker in bringing chaos to Gotham. And with “Mother Monster” in the role, we’re as excited as ever.
The Musical Element
The role is not without its fair share of song numbers though not original ones, making it a jukebox musical. Gaga and Phoenix are set to serenade the audience with 15 reinterpretations of well-known songs. It’s still not clear if they’ll be composing original tracks for the movie too.
In the trailer, they’re seen either taking turns on stage, on the rooftops, or in the middle of the road, while chaos erupts in the background, all while Sinatra plays in the background.
Gaga’s transformation in the trailer
It looks like Lady Gaga has finally woken up and decided to show her fans that she’s not only one of America’s greatest singers, but also a widely acclaimed actress. She’s done a great job of looking obsessed and crazy in love with her idol in the movie.
One of the first things Gaga had to do to fit into her role was to downplay her larger-than-life presence on screen. Not only that, but it looks like she also had to downplay her musical genius. And it must’ve taken a crazy amount of hours and reverse singing lessons to transform her into Harley Quinn.
Whereas Gaga knows singing, Quinn wouldn’t, so she’s had to momentarily forget all she knows about music and start essentially from scratch. This also means singing wrong notes sometimes, Gaga informed in an interview.
Gaga takes on two roles in the movie, both of which are out of her usual comfort zone. She’ll start off as Harleen Quinzel, the boring music psychiatrist of Arkham Asylum, and finally, as she descends more and more into madness, as Harley Quinn.
Gaga’s Own Interpretation of “Lee”
The character will retain some of Margot Robbie’s Quinn’s traits, but it’s essentially Gaga’s own interpretation of “Lee”. She’s bringing in a new and unique take on the loony troublemaker.
“Lee is really special to me, she’s a truly vulnerable, sweet person.” Gaga said when asked about her character. “You know my version of Harley is mine and it’s very authentic to this movie and these characters,” She added.
A little bit of her Gaga-ness shines through when they take turns on stage—Phoenix in suit and tie and Gaga in an elegant get up of a gown, slicked back blonde hair, and flawlessly sharp makeup.
Otherwise, she’s either sans makeup and wearing pajamas, or in full Harley Quinn makeup, wearing Quinn’s signature dapper, full-of-color clothes. And the best look from the trailer was her red blazer, white and black checkered top with the Harley Quinn makeup.
We can’t wait to see Gaga return to the big screen in “Joker: Folie A Deux”. The movie will be released on October 4.
