Driving through the Pacific Coast Highway

If you’re looking for a jaw-dropping journey filled with stunning vistas, quirky roadside stops, and a whole lot of fun, buckle up because the Pacific Coast Highway is where it’s at. This iconic route stretches from San Francisco to San Diego, serving up some of the best views California has to offer. Hit the road

Carmel-by-the-Sea→Big Sur→Hearst Castle

Your road trip through the Pacific coast starts in San Francisco, with the first stretch ending in Big Sur. You hit the charming little town of Carmel-by-the-Sea first. Carmel is a mecca for artists, writers, and musicians with more than 100 art studios, galleries, and antique stores that represent the works of master artists. This town is straight out of a fairy tale, with its storybook cottages and art galleries galore. Grab a coffee at one of the cozy cafes and stroll down Ocean Avenue. If you’re in the mood for a beach day, head over to Carmel Beach for some sun and surf.

Big Sur:

Big Sur stretches between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Hearst Castle, the roughly 90-mile-long stretch of rugged coastline that feels like stepping into a postcard. As you wind along the cliffs, you’ll be treated to epic views of the rugged coastline crashing against the Pacific Ocean. Pull over at McWay Falls for a quick hike—this waterfall tumbles right into the ocean. Stop at the Sand Dollar Beach for swimming & surfing, and pitch a tent at popular campgrounds like Plaskett Creek and Kirk Creek or hike to State Parks.

Hearst Castle

While we’re on the topic of iconic pit stops, let’s talk about Hearst Castle in San Simeon. This opulent estate is a true gem. Take a guided tour through the grand rooms filled with art, history, and all the glitz and glam you can imagine. The views from the hilltop are stunning, making you feel like you’ve stepped back in time.

Santa Barabara→Malibu→San Diego

The second stretch of the road trip starts in the south with Santa Barbara. Known as the “American Riviera,” this coastal city boasts beautiful beaches, palm trees, and a laid-back vibe. Take a leisurely stroll along Stearns Wharf pier, grab some fresh seafood, or chill out on the beach. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the nearby wine country in the Santa Ynez Valley and enjoy some really good local wine while watching the sunset.

Malibu:

Continuing your journey, you’ll hit Malibu, where the rich and famous call home. Even if you don’t spot a celebrity, the beaches here are to die for.

Short Malibu Bucket list:

→Stop by Zuma Beach for some sunbathing or surfing.

→Getty Villa: Check out the Getty Villa for a dose of ancient art and culture. The views from this hillside museum are absolutely breathtaking.

→Explore the hidden beauty of El Matador State Beach.

→Take a stroll along Malibu Pier for breathtaking ocean views.

→Hike the scenic trails at Point Dume and Solstice Canyon.

→Wine tasting: If you’re a wine lover, you can’t miss the fun wine tasting at Malibu Wine Safari.

→Surfing: Head to Surfrider Beach for surfing.

San Diego:

Finally, our adventure wraps up in sunny San Diego. Explore Balboa Park, home to gorgeous gardens and museums or hit up the famous San Diego Zoo if you’re up for some animal antics. Don’t forget to indulge in some of that local cuisine of fish tacos. If you are a swimmer, a scuba diver or snorkeler, or if you want to spot sea lions, the sandy shores of La Jolla Cove await you. Put an end to your day on one of the famous beaches of San Diego with a glass of locally made craft beer.

So, whether you’re chasing sunsets, soaking up the sun, or just enjoying the ride, the Pacific Coast Highway is an unforgettable journey that will leave you with memories to cherish. Pack your bags, roll down the windows, and get ready for the road trip of a lifetime. Happy travels, amigos!
