Your journey will kick off in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan and the “Spring City” due to its pleasant climate year-round. It’s a city that blends modernity with a rich history. Start your trip by strolling around Green Lake Park, singing and dancing in the morning sun with the locals. They might even give you a lesson or two about tai chi.
Explore the ancient towns of the Yunnan region: Dali and Lijiang.
- Dali: This charming town is nestled between the Cangshan Mountains and Erhai Lake. Stepping into this old, walled city will be like stepping into a historical Chinese drama; its called the “Most Romantic Ancient Town” for a reason. Its history stretches back to the 8th Century, its traditional built houses tracing back to the Ming dynasty. Explore the Buddhist architecture of the Three Pagodas and the ancient towns and villages around Dali.
- Then, it was off to Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage site that feels like a step back in time. The old town is a maze of cobblestone streets, quaint shops, and vibrant flower-lined canals. Lijiang is a sight to behold with its symmetrical Chinese architecture and old Bai houses against a backdrop of the mountains. For a little bit of the city nightlight, head to the trendy cocktail bar in Lijiang, ‘The Clouds Heading’ and then, stroll through the magical streets during sunset. Pro tip: Don’t miss the chance to hike to the top of Lion Hill for a panoramic view that’ll take your breath away.
- Blue Moon Valley: Spend a half day in the stunning Blue Moon Valley, located in the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic route and 19 miles from Lijiang. The man-made water pools of turquoise blue reflect the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and make the valley one of the most beautiful places on earth to be at.
- The showstopper: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. This majestic peak is the perfect backdrop for some outdoor adventure. You can take the cable car up to the higher altitudes (approx 4300m) and find yourself surrounded by breathtaking views of 13 snow-capped peaks resembling a white Chinese dragon. If you’re up for it, there are plenty of trails to explore, each more picturesque than the last.
Food and Local culture:
While you are at Dali, treat yourself to a hot pot meal, complete with the bubbling broth, fresh veggies, wild mushrooms and a platter of meat. Lose yourself in the streets for a bit and you’ll eventually stumble upon at least one traditional teahouse. Take a small, mindful break and sip on some local pu-erh tea.
If you’re in the mood to eat all the local food you can, you’ll love the traditional Chinese round table lunches, especially when they serve the famous ‘Crossing the Bridge Noodles’, and you’ll get to watch your ingredients cook right in front of your eyes.
