“All unhappiness in life comes from not accepting what is.”
This has been a great couple of years for all Sebastian Stan fans (Sebastian Stans). His role as Steve, the cannibal in his 2022 movie Fresh, got the movie great acclaim. After that, he, with his incredible acting, single-handedly held up the ratings of the 2024 Donald Trump biopic, The Apprentice.
And now, finally, he is bringing us another thriller with “A Different Man.” The movie is coming to us Fall of 2024, but the trailer of the movie dropped recently, and we can’t stop gushing about it, so we’re gonna gush about it here.
Movie Overview: A Different Man
“A Different Man” is a 2024 American dark comedy psychological thriller film written and directed by Aaron Schimberg, starring Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve, and Adam Pearson.
It premiered as an official selection at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, 2024, and it is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 20, 2024.
The official synopsis of the film reads, “Aspiring actor Edward undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. But his new dream face quickly turns into a nightmare, as he becomes obsessed with reclaiming what was lost.”
Plot Details and Character Insights
The trailer shows Edward (Sebastian Stan) sitting in a diner, and someone approaching him claiming to know him, evoking the feeling that Edward’s face is recognizable and common, when it really isn’t. In the film, Edward has face disfigurement, a rare condition called neurofibromatosis (NF), which becomes the reason for his impeding confidence.
His neighbor and possibly his crush, Ingrid (played by Renate Reinsve) becomes his confidant. His other neighbor, Ollie (Billy Griffith) offers him words of encouragement, in the famous words of Lady Gaga, “All unhappiness in life comes from not accepting what is.”
But none of the motivation works on Stan, so when he has an accident that injures his face, and he’s given an experimental drug to use for his deformity, he doesn’t hesitate. At first everything is okay and people are celebrating his new face. But, then, Adam Pearson walks in.
Adam Pearson’s Role as Oswald
Adam Pearson, who has NF in real life, plays Oswald, another man suffering from face deformity, but with his confidence and charm perfectly intact. Everyone’s attention is shifted from him to Oswald, and everyone wants to get a piece of Oswald, even Ingrid. Suddenly, everyone is asking, “That guy’s amazing.” “What do you know about him?” and “Who is he?”
We love that Adam Pearson has such an impactful role in, A Different Man. He had a small but pretty good role in Jonathan Glazer’s “Under The Skin”, and he was fantastic in it. So it’s nice to see him in a bigger supporting role. His face might not be “perfect” but his talent and charisma shine through.
His initiative of spreading the word and awareness about NF is commendable.
The Lesson Behind the Film
Edward learns to be careful what he wishes for because it looks like he’s now regretting his decision of going through the procedure. The trailer incited a lot of praise for the production studio, A24, especially for the 1970s vibe, the colors, the framing and the subtle, “New York I love you but you’re bringing me down” reference. Aaron Schimberg and the other creators really created a comical nod to NYC with this one.
Themes of Insecurity and Self-Transformation
We love the premise of it, how disability might cause severe insecurity for some, but have the complete opposite effect on someone else. Stan’s character transforms into someone he thought he always wanted to be but then loses himself in the process. If you can relate, then this movie should be on your radar.
That’s what Stan will be portraying in the film. A Different Man is officially being called Stan’s best performance yet. After watching his performance as Bucky Barnes in Captain America, and Steve in Fresh, we can say that we’re really looking forward to his “best performance as an actor.”A Different Man will officially be released in Fall 2024.
