About the Series
To all the “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder,” book fans’ excitement, Netflix has finally released the show airing date—and it’s nearing. The TV show adaptation has already been released in the UK.
The BBC series based on the book series of the same name by Holly Jackson, is set to follow the story of Pip Fitz-Amobi, played by Emma Myers. Pip is a brilliant girl turned amateur detective who chooses to investigate a murder that previously occurred in her town.
The history of the famous town murder goes like this: Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh, who then ended up committing s*icide. But smart and single minded Pip Fitz-Amobi starts questioning the evidence that says Sal was the killer. Which means that the real killer is still out there—and now, they’re trying to keep Pip from the truth.
The show has spot-on casting and captivating aesthetics, not to say anything about iconic fashion trends that the cast seems to set. Especially Emma Myers, who’s rocking at playing the detective girlie Pip Fits-Amobi and looking good while doing it. Other than Emma’s lead role, the show sees Zain Iqbal as the second protagonist Ravi Singh, playing the deceased convict, Sal Singh’s brother.
We need a minute, or hundred, to get over Pip’s iconic fashion moments in “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.” And that’s not to say that the others aren’t also having their own fashion moments on set.
On this journey we decode the main cast’s clothing choices, and decide what we should follow, and what we shouldn’t.
1. Pip’s Statement Look
Emma Myers as Pip really said SLAY with this one.
This one is Pip’s best outfit throughout the series. It’s really giving 1980s, brilliant girl-detective who wears her dad’s clothes and still manages to look the coolest in town. And a moment of appreciation for Barney, Pip’s loyal dog. Just because.
2. THE JACKET
We all have that one jacket that we’re always seen wearing even when we have other jackets to wear. This jacket is Pip’s “the one”. It just keeps popping up throughout the episodes.
70% of the time, her outfits just seem to be different variations of baby tees and tank tops, blue jeans, this bottle-green jacket and the same brown sneakers.
And honestly, we don’t know what to feel about the jacket. Sure, Emma is really pulling it off, but aren’t there other options for your “the one” jacket, Pip? And as we write this, we realize that the stylist might’ve actually been right with this one too, because it really seems to match Pip’s vibe.
3. The Legend of the Pride Socks and the Bomber Jacket
It’s Cara Wards’ pride socks that take your attention first. But nobody can deny that it’s Zach Chen who steals the show with his whole brown-black color scheme, and mysterious detective-boy thing going on.
Because did you see him with his Leather Bomber jacket, his platform shoes, his sweaters, and his oh-so-nerdy glasses? And who could forget his collection of hats?
Both Asha Banks, playing gay character Cara Wards, and Raiko Gohara, playing Zach Chen, have supporting roles as Pip’s best friends.
4. Ravi Singh: Minimalist Chic
We have another jacket fanatic on our hands. Ravi Singh, the secondary protagonist played by Zain Iqbal, is Pip’s partner in crime-solving in the series and the deceased convict’s brother. Throughout the series, he can be seen wearing darker colors and having basic style.
Both Ravi’s and Pip’s fashion (and acting) seem to really complement each other. And not only that, but both their stylists have done such a great job that it actually looks like book Pip and book Ravi walked off the pages.
5. The Smolder!
For left to right: The sweater vest, the black leather trench coat, THE JACKET, the low-rise jeans with the printed belt, and last but not least, another one of Connor’s (Jude Collie) infamous printed sweaters.
6. Sweater Vest? Sweater Fest.
Multiple characters throughout the first 6 episodes of the series can be seen—in appropriate 80s fashion in the UK—wearing sweaters and sweater vests. Sweater vests with these vibrant prints and bright colors add the perfect pop against the dark-ish, ominous and cold, lighting of the series.
A special shout out to Anne Maxwell Martin, playing Pip’s mother Leanne Amobi for her flawless sweater vest style.
7. Are we finally bringing back denim jackets?
Serious question. Because if we pair the fitting denim jacket with the red hair and the headband, we really could make a successful case to bring the fitting denim jacket back. Or maybe it’s just Laura Gibson (Yali Topol Margalith) who can pull it off?
8. More sweater vests.
The amount of fashion trends these people have set in the fashion world is ridiculous—and we’re all for it.
We will NOT be taking any calls on August 1st. Why? Well, because the series will be released in two-episode installments on August 1st on Netflix.
