Top 5 Reasons Why “Legally Blonde” the movie is a Must-Watch even in 2024

Legally Blonde, the hit cult classic which was released in 2001, is a progressively feel-good, women’s empowerment movie that has multiple subtexts despite being, essentially, a rom-com.

The cult film, directed by Robert Luketic, and starring Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Coolidge and Luke Wilson, follows Elle Woods (Witherspoon), on a mission to win back her ex-boyfriend. So she enrolls into the Harvard School of Law and in the process, overcomes stereotypes and achieves her greatest feat of becoming a successful lawyer.

The film became a colossal success, which prompted a sequel two years later, as well as a stage musical which opened in 2007.

A New Prequel Series

One of the main reasons to watch the film would be the prequel series. After the Legally Blonde spin-off series,—yes, series—was announced, fans of the previously two part flick couldn’t have been more excited.

In April 2024, Amazon MGM Studios announced that the prequel series to the infamous must-watch flick would be released next year. Titled “Elle”, the series will be set in the same world as Legally Blonde and follow Elle’s character before the events of the two films. The announcement was aided by the reel that Reese posted on Instagram.

And since this is true news, we have decided to (re)watch the Legally Blonde to be prepared for the series.

If that reasoning hasn’t managed to convince you, then read on, and be prepared with some popcorn, lemonade, some pink paper and a furry pen (just in case).

Stereotypes against blondes

You can’t deny this, though, because stereotypes against blondes are the most common one out there, coming only after stereotypes against women. And this movie manages to contest them all.

Marc Platt, the producer of Legally Blonde, has said:

“The world looks at Elle and sees someone who is blonde and beautiful but nothing more. Elle, on the other hand, doesn’t judge herself or anybody else. She thinks the world’s great, she’s great, everyone’s great and nothing can change that. She’s truly an irrepressible modern heroine.” And that about sums up Witherspoon’s character.

Stereotypes against women

Women in men dominated fields were hard to find, especially when the movie was released more than two decades ago. And, so, this has been an inspiration for women to not only know their potential, but also succeed in those fields.

“At least once a week, I have a woman come up to me and say, ‘I went to law school because of Legally Blonde,'” Witherspoon has said regarding the issue. “It’s incredible…You can be unapologetically feminine but also smart and driven.”

For the phenomenon that is Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon’s funny, nuanced performance with just the right amount of her pizazz, makes this flick better than it would have been otherwise. Comic timing is immaculate, her persona irresistible.

She was given the role of embodying every woman out there with big dreams and she not only made it work, but delivered the best performance and became the role model that every teenager is looking for at that age.

For the male lead’s jawline

And if Witherspoon’s iconic Elle Woods doesn’t convince you, take a look at this:

Need I say anymore? Because you can’t deny it, Luke Wilson is the perfect Emmett Richmonds to Witherspoon’s Elle, with his sharper-than-saw jawline and his dreamy green eyes.

Learn something about law

This is where the pink paper and furry pen will come into your use. Although the film has dumbed down most of the legal stuff using only common legal terms to aid public understanding of law, it is a great source of information to learn from.

Oh, to be so beautiful and smart at the same time. That would be life.

The moral of the story is that you should: “What? Like it’s hard,” the heck out of all those stereotypes, and get ready to take on this world at its worst. Lastly, this user will be busy on the release date of the series, because it’s time to revisit or discover this beloved classic that continues to charm and empower audiences worldwide.
