5 Female Indie Artists You Can Listen To While Waiting for New Music from Boygenius

No, Boygenius hasn’t broken up.
You would say Boygenius has broken up, but we don’t believe that, they’re just on an indefinite hiatus (yes, we might be in denial). But considering that they’ve done this before only to come back to release their 2023 album banger, “The Record”, we actually might be right to hope.
Why Listen to Indie Music?
If you’re a first timer going into indie music, then here is a quick sum-up of the scene: if you like real organic sound and a chunkiness to your music, you should start listening to indie, or, even better, indie rock. With indie songs, it’s clear that they’re low production value shows, but that does not deter from the sheer brilliance of the song.
Consisting of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Lucy Dacus, Boygenius is an American indie rock supergroup. All three members of the band could at any point in their lives become successful individually, they’re that good.
Their studio album, “The Record,” one of their best releases, won them three Grammys and one Brit Award, peaking at number four on the U.S. Billboard 200.
The problem is though, that we won’t be able to listen to any new music from them. So, instead of moping about the news of their indefinite hiatus, you can listen to other similar female indie artists.
Angel Olsen:
Angel Olsen, an American singer-songwriter hailing from St. Louis, sings alternative rock. To date she’s released 6 albums, with her song, “Shut up kiss me,” being a part of her second album, “My Woman,” for which she won Album of the Year in the Libera Awards.
The song, “Shut up Kiss me” has gained recent recognition for its fantastic chorus. I love the way she sings that melody, and how surprisingly aggressive it becomes. She doesn’t use any autotune for any of her songs and you can hear the bass drums in her songs.
Girl in Red:
Let’s travel to Norway and get to know Girl in Red, a budding independent musician.“I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend”, one of her hits from 2018, amassed an astounding 40 million plays on Spotify alone. She has maintained her home studio and continued to release music, garnering over 3 million monthly Spotify listeners.
HAIM:
HAIM is right up the alley for all Boygenius lovers. It is an American rock band that’s been around since 2006. It’s based in Los Angeles, composed of three sisters—Este, Danielle, and Alana Haim. Their songs reflect great harmonies and boy can they play their instruments.
Their first album, “Days Are Gone”, charted in the top ten in several countries and number one in the UK. The group was nominated for the Best New Artist at the 57th Grammys. We love their song, If I could change your mind. It has a great electronic, but indie feel to it.
Courtney Barnet:
Known for her deadpan singing style and witty, rambling lyrics, Courtney Barnett attracted attention with the release of her “The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas” in 2013. Two years later, she released her first album and won her first Grammy nomination.
Nirvana fans who want to try to dip their toes into indie, can go for Courtney Barnet. Her song, ‘Pedestrian at Best’ has the same distorted drums segment like ‘Dive’ by Nirvana.
Boygenius:
It started in 2018 when they first released an EP, boygenius. And then took a long break. Five years later, they returned with a bang. So considering that they’ve done it before, we’re all for them coming back from long breaks and releasing bangers.
Of course they’re included in the list. Just because they’re broken up, oh sorry, on a hiatus, doesn’t mean that you can’t still listen to their old songs.
We will be listening to their songs ON REPEAT until they come back.
