Calling all powder hounds and thrill-seekers; this is your moment. As a rule, the snow can be annoying and a hassle, but it can also be romantic and thrill inducing. U.S.A is home to some of the best skiing destinations on the planet, where fresh white powder meets the jaw-dropping views from up high. Whether you’re the type to cozy up at your lodge and sip hot cocoa or the daredevil type carving up double black diamonds, these three epic skiing hotspots are guaranteed to make your winter holidays the coldest, and thus, the best.
1. Aspen, Colorado – The Glamorous Snow Playground
Aspen is where skiing meets stardom. This iconic Colorado resort town is a blend of world-class slopes and posh après-ski vibes.
With four ski areas—Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass—this place has something for everyone. Beginners can take it slow at Buttermilk, while seasoned pros can challenge the Highlands Bowl at Aspen Highlands. And let’s not forget Snowmass, which boasts the most vertical feet of skiing in the country.
The town has more to offer, of course, with its swanky restaurants, chic boutiques, and cozy wine bars. Plus, you can’t leave without witnessing the famous wine-colored peaks, the legendary Maroon Bells.
2. Jackson Hole, Wyoming – For the Hardcore Thrill-Seekers
If Aspen is all glam, Jackson Hole is raw, rugged, and downright gnarly, with its world-class terrain suitable for both skiing and snowboarding. The Great Tetons are an adrenaline junkie’s paradise, famous for its steep terrain, massive powder stashes, and the legendary Corbet’s Couloir, a run so intense and steep it feels more like jumping off a cliff than skiing.
The resort itself has over 2,500 acres of terrain, and with 4,139 feet of vertical drop, it’s got some of the most challenging slopes in North America. But don’t sweat it if you’re not ready, there are also beginner and intermediate runs to keep things chill.
And when the sun dips behind the Grand Tetons? Head into Jackson Town Square for a local craft beer, hit up the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar (yes, it has saddle stools), and swap your ski stories with fellow adventurers.
3. Park City, Utah – The Crowd-Pleaser
Park City is like the Swiss Army knife of ski destinations; it’s versatile, fun, and jam-packed with everything you could want on a snow getaway. It’s home to the largest ski resort in the U.S., Park City Mountain Resort.
This place is a family favorite, with groomed trails for the kiddos and tree runs for the adventurous. Park City has hosted events during the 2002 Winter Olympics, so you can test your skills on Olympic-worthy terrain parks.
Off the slopes, Main Street is a winter wonderland of twinkling lights, galleries, and delicious dining options. If you want to enjoy the best of both worlds, I advise you to plan around the dates of the Sundance Film Festival this year, which starts 23rd Jan next year and continues until 2nd February.
You can have it all this December, just pack your gear, grab your goggles, and get ready to make some turns. Just don’t forget to fuel up on hot cocoa—or a spiked toddy to warm you up—when you’re done. Après-ski is half the fun, after all.
