10 Free Things To do in Paris

Remember that Paris trip that never got to see the day because

It goes like this in your mind, you start planning a Paris trip, you’ve decided which restaurants to eat at, which thrift stores to which and which bar to frequent, but when you realize that you started planning without a budget it’s too late.

A trip to Paris is bound to be expensive, with the countless big-name monuments, museums and the popular, crowded tourist destinations (and it starts with the exorbitant flight tickets). But now, you can book those tickets and enjoy Paris even if you’re as broke as a student. Not only are these activities free, but they’re also relatively less-known and thus, less crowded. Some of these places are well-known, but are free to visit on particular days and time, which are mentioned below.

  1. Visit Le Petit Palais – Paris Museum of Fine Arts:

Swing by Le Petit Palais, a gem of a museum that’s often overshadowed by the Louvre. This spot is home to a killer collection of paintings and sculptures, all set in a stunning building that feels like stepping into a fairytale. Entry is free, of course.

2. Explore the artistic neighborhood Montmartre: The most popular neighborhood in Paris for art and history buffs. Although not free, you can check out La Halle Saint-Pierre, the museum that houses a cafe and a bookshop in addition to a museum. It stands at the foot of the Sacre’-Coeur church, which is something else you can explore while in Montmartre; its open everyday from 06:00 am to 10:30 pm. Wander the streets, check out galleries, get crepes from a food stall, and check out the overshadowed Church of Saint Pierre. While you’re in Montmartre, visit Musée de la Vie Romantique, or the Museum of Romantic Life, located at the foot of Montmartre hill, and known as one of three literary museums in Paris.

3.  Relax at Jardin du Luxembourg

When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of Paris, the Jardin du Luxembourg is the place to be. This gorgeous garden boasts manicured lawns, charming fountains, and even cute little sailboats for rent. Grab a seat on a bench, take in the scenery, and watch the world go by—it’s the perfect way to unwind and soak up that Parisian vibe.

4. Musée de la Libération de Paris:

Check out the Musée de la Libération de Paris, where history comes to life! This museum dives deep into the city’s liberation during World War II, showcasing fascinating exhibits and personal stories. It’s a must-visit for history buffs and anyone curious about Paris’s resilient spirit.

5. Climb the Arc de Triomphe

Pay tribute to the fallen heroes of France who sacrificed themselves during the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars. You’re in for some workout for this item on the list. But after you climb the stairs (or take a lift and climb the rest of the way up), you’ll be able to get a peek at the city’s layout, which will make the climb worth all your leg cramps. There is no entry fee for EU residents under the age of 26. And for others, pro tip: if you visit on the first Sunday of January, February, March, November, or December, you can skip the entry fee.

6. Stroll along the Seine River

The views are straight-up dreamy, especially at sunset when the city glows. And don’t forget to pack a picnic hamper filled with goodies—there’s nothing quite like munching on some cheese and baguette while watching (and judging) the boats and people around. It’s a classic Parisian experience.

7. Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris:

The Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris is packed with modern masterpieces and is free to enter. From stunning paintings to contemporary sculptures, this place has it all. Plus, the building itself is pretty cool, with views of the Seine—so you can soak in some culture and enjoy the views Paris has to offer on the go.

8. Musée Carnavalet – Museum of the History of Paris:

Dive into the history of Paris at the Musée Carnavalet. This museum is like a time capsule, showcasing the evolution of the city through art, artifacts, and even some quirky exhibits. It’s a fun way to learn about Paris’s rich past while wandering through beautiful rooms—definitely a treat for history buffs and curious travelers alike.

9. Go window-shopping on the Champs-Élysées

If you’re in the mood for a little retail therapy without spending the big bucks, head to the Champs-Élysées. Even if you’re not looking to splurge, window-shopping here is the best, your mental health will thank you. From luxury boutiques to quirky shops, there’s something for everyone. Grab a coffee, because that seems to be the ‘drink of the trip’, stroll along the famous avenue, either judging the couture in the windows or on the Parisians themselves.

10. The Louvre: The Louvre? For free? Yes. You might not know this, but The Louvre opens its doors for free on the first Friday of the month after 6 PM (except in July and August). It’s the perfect opportunity to wander through this iconic museum without spending a euro. Just be ready for the crowds and bring your A-game to navigate through all those masterpieces.
